Bird Friendly® coffee– Certification for the Future of Coffee and Migratory Birds
What is Bird Friendly® Program?
Bird Friendly® program was established in 1999 in the US.
It originates in the large decrease in the number of migratory birds between North and Central/South America. Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, the brand owner of Bird Friendly® certification, found out that 3 billion of migratory birds had been lost due to the loss of forest in Central America, which could have been transit points of their long travel. In order to conserve their habitat and protect migratory songbirds, Smithsonian scientists developed Bird Friendly® certification, with the criteria of organic farming and production under various shade trees, which is called “Gold Standard”.
As of January 2022, 53 farms/cooperatives in 12 countries are certified as Bird Friendly®, and 1,780 species of birds are found in these Bird Friendly® farms. SC Foods is an exclusive importer of Bird Friendly® coffee in Japan. We play a role of importing and expanding Bird Friendly® coffee to Japanese market.
Bird Friendly® coffee products are available in supermarkets and retail shops all over Japan. Also, some universities and hotels introduce Bird Friendly® coffee at their institutions.

Every Bird Friendly® farm has a rich forest (shade-trees) including native species of tree.
This forest is not only birds’ home, but also raises delicious coffees.
Under this Bird Friendly shade canopy, farms are able to produce quality coffee while maintaining vital habitat for birds and other wildlife. The forest itself is the important essence to produce delicious, matured coffee. Therefore, most Bird Friendly® coffee is classified as “Specialty Coffee”, which is high grade with great flavor.
